The options for lashes for your wedding day

I am Cathryn Kerwin-Rawlinson, a specialist Bridal Makeup Artist serving North Wales and Cheshire. In this blog, I share my insights on eyelashes, which can frequently be the final touch in crafting bridal makeup looks. It's crucial to make the right choice, as I discuss here.

When planning your wedding day look, eyelashes might not be the first thing that comes to mind, but they play a crucial role in how your makeup photographs. A photographer will often talk about catchlights in the eyes—those tiny glimmers of light that make your eyes look bright and alive in photos. Since I've studied photography, I completely understand why this matters. The wrong lashes can cast shadows over your eyes, blocking those catchlights and making your eyes look dull rather than radiant.

So, let's talk about your options and, more importantly, what not to do.

Avoid Overpowering Lashes

One of the biggest mistakes brides make is choosing lashes that are far too heavy. Some lashes, particularly the very dense Russian-style lashes, can be so thick that they completely overtake your face. I always talk about harmony in makeup—everything should work together to enhance your features, not overpower them. When lashes are too full, too long, or too thick, they can dominate your face, taking away from the beauty of your eyeshadow, your eye shape, and even your overall bridal look.

Your Lash Options

There are so many different lash styles to consider, and choosing the right one depends on the look you want to achieve and what feels comfortable for you.

Classic Lash Extensions

These are semi-permanent lashes where one extension is applied to each of your natural lashes. They give a defined yet natural look, enhancing your eyes without overwhelming them. Perfect for brides who want a polished but subtle finish.

Hybrid Lashes

A step up from classic lashes, hybrid lashes mix single lashes with small fans to add a bit more volume and dimension. These work beautifully if you want something soft but slightly fuller than classic extensions.

LVL Lash Lift

LVL (Length, Volume, Lift) is a great option if you prefer to enhance your natural lashes rather than add extensions. This treatment lifts and curls your lashes upwards, making your eyes appear more open. However, a word of caution: don't go too curly! If they're lifted too much, they can touch your eyelids and make it difficult to apply enhancements.

Three-Quarter Lashes

These sit on the outer corners of your eyes, adding lift and definition without covering your entire lash line. They are a fantastic option for a natural yet elegant look.

Individual & Cluster Lashes

These are my personal favourite. With clusters or individuals, I can build a lash style tailored to your eye shape. If you want a cat-eye effect, I can add more volume towards the outer edges, while a more feathery, natural look can be created with evenly placed clusters. These give flexibility and customisation that strip lashes just can't offer.

Strip Lashes

I used to use strip lashes, but I've moved away from them in favour of clusters and three-quarter lashes. However, they are still an option if you want something quick and temporary. They come in various styles, from wispy and delicate to bold and dramatic. Just be sure to choose a style that complements your features rather than overpowers them.

Final Thoughts

Your wedding day lashes should enhance your natural beauty, not steal the show. When we meet for your makeup trial, we'll go through all the options and choose the best style for you. My biggest advice? Stay clear of the overly long, dense Russian lashes that block the catchlight in your eyes. You want your bridal makeup to be harmonious, elegant, and flattering—and the right lashes will help you achieve just that.

If you're unsure which option is right for you, let's discuss it at your trial. Together, we'll find the perfect lashes that complement your features and photograph beautifully on your special day.
